Balayage allows for sun-kissed natural-looking hair colour with soft, less noticeable regrowth lines. Hair colour - very often blonde blends - is usually hand-painted throughout the hair to accentuate your hairstyle and facial features.  It looks like your hair has been kissed by the sun and usually becomes blonder towards the end of your hair.
Balayage looks best on mid-length to long hair and your stylist will often add waves at the end of your service to show you how the colours catch the light.  Balayage tends to look glossy and expensive and can be as subtle or as bold as you wish.
You may have also come across the terms ombre and root stretching.  These are forms of balayage but they create slightly different looks.  Ombre tends to create a more two-toned effect where you can more obviously see the two shades; while root stretching is where your darker roots are stretched out to reveal lighter ends.  Babylights are very similar to highlights but these are very tiny, fine highlights to give subtle results.
